Tartar vs Plaque: What Is the Difference and How to Prevent It

Plaque is a soft, sticky, barely visible bacterial film that constantly builds up on the teeth; tartar (calculus) is the hardened layer that forms when plaque is not removed and becomes mineralised. The key difference: you can remove plaque yourself at home with brushing and interdental cleaning, whereas tartar can only be removed by a dentist using professional instruments. Both are the main cause of gum disease and tooth decay, so removing plaque in good time prevents tartar from forming.

What does the research show? Plaque is a living bacterial biofilm and can be removed with daily brushing and flossing; tartar is a biofilm that has been mineralised (calcified) by the calcium and phosphate in saliva, and its surface creates a rough base for new plaque to stick to (Periodontology 2000, 2018). Hardened tartar cannot be removed with a brush at home — it is cleaned only with professional ultrasonic or hand instruments. What is plaque?

Plaque is a soft, sticky film made up of bacteria, saliva and food debris. It begins to build up on the teeth again within a few hours of brushing. As the bacteria in plaque break down sugar, they produce acid — this acid damages the enamel (tooth decay) and inflames the gums (gingivitis). Because plaque is soft, it can be removed at home with correct brushing and interdental floss.

What is tartar (calculus)?

If plaque is not removed, the minerals in saliva harden it and it turns into tartar. Tartar is a hard, rough surface — usually yellowish or brown, and it most often builds up along the gum line and behind the lower front teeth. Its rough surface collects even more plaque, so the problem accelerates. Because tartar is hard, it cannot be removed with a brush — only a dentist can remove it with special instruments (a scaler) during a professional cleaning.

How to prevent it

Preventing tartar really comes down to removing plaque in good time:

  • Brush twice a day — with a fluoride toothpaste, a soft brush and the correct technique.
  • Clean between the teeth every day — floss or an interdental brush removes the plaque a brush cannot reach.
  • Limit sugar and confectionery — this reduces the acid produced by bacteria.
  • Regular professional cleaning — usually once or twice a year, though this may vary depending on the condition of your gums.
  • Anti-tartar toothpaste — it may slow down the hardening of new plaque, but it does not dissolve existing tartar.

When to see a dentist

Can I remove tartar myself at home? No. Because tartar has hardened and is firmly attached to the tooth, an ordinary brush or floss will not remove it. How long does it take for plaque to turn into tartar? This varies from person to person, but plaque that is not removed can usually begin to mineralise and harden within a few days. That is why daily brushing and interdental cleaning matter — if you remove plaque every day, it never gets the chance to turn into tartar.

Does tartar cause gum disease? Yes, indirectly. The rough surface of tartar collects more bacteria and keeps the gums constantly inflamed — this can lead to gingivitis and, if left untreated, to periodontitis. Removing tartar in good time stops this process.

Do anti-tartar toothpastes work? Such toothpastes may slow down the hardening of new plaque, but they do not dissolve tartar that has already formed. They can be part of your daily care, but they are not a substitute for professional cleaning.
