Professional Hygiene

Healthy gums and long-lasting teeth start with professional cleaning once or twice a year — a calm and comfortable procedure.

Professional Hygiene

Professional dental hygiene in Baku is performed at Smile by Dr. Bakhtiyar with ultrasonic scaling and Air Flow. The procedure removes hard deposits (tartar) and soft plaque from the tooth surface and the gum line. A toothbrush and floss at home cannot remove this hard layer. The dentist checks each tooth first, then cleans and polishes it.

If your gums bleed when you brush, if you notice a lasting bad smell, or if a yellow or brown line appears near the gum line, it is time for a cleaning. Swollen gums and sensitive tooth necks are early signals too. We recommend hygiene once or twice a year. Patients with braces, implants or dentures benefit from more frequent visits.

The visit follows clear steps. First the dentist examines your mouth and gums. Then the ultrasonic tip loosens tartar with gentle vibration. Next, Air Flow — a stream of air, water and fine powder — removes tea, coffee and tobacco stains. Finally the teeth are polished with paste so the surface is smooth and plaque builds up more slowly.

After the cleaning your teeth feel smooth and return to their natural shade. Mild sensitivity to cold may last a day or two and usually fades on its own. For the first 24 hours it is better to avoid tea, coffee, dark berries and smoking. The dentist also shows correct brushing and flossing; this separate coaching service costs 100 AZN.

Complex professional oral hygiene starts from 160 AZN and is usually completed in one visit of about an hour. If gum inflammation (gingivitis) is present, treatment takes two sessions and costs 300 AZN. The exact plan is confirmed after the first consultation and examination (60 AZN). Hygiene is also the right first step before whitening.

If this sounds familiar

If you have one of these complaints, this service may be right for you:

  • my gums bleed when I brush
  • I have constant bad breath
  • there is yellow-brown build-up near my gums
  • my teeth are stained from tea and coffee
  • my gum is swollen and red
  • my tooth necks sting with cold drinks
  • I feel hard deposits behind my lower front teeth
  • I have not had a cleaning for years

Frequently asked questions

Is professional cleaning painful?

Most patients find the procedure easy — you mainly feel light vibration and cool water. If your tooth necks are very sensitive, the dentist can use local anaesthesia or a desensitising gel. Just tell your dentist about any discomfort and the settings will be softened.

How often should I have a cleaning?

Once or twice a year is enough for most people. Smokers, heavy tea or coffee drinkers, and patients with braces, implants or dentures may need it more often. Your dentist will suggest the right interval after examining your mouth.

Does cleaning damage the enamel?

Ultrasonic scaling and Air Flow remove plaque and tartar, not healthy enamel, when used correctly. At the end the teeth are polished, and a smooth surface stays clean for longer. Leaving tartar in place is far more harmful to the gums and roots.

Will my teeth look whiter afterwards?

Hygiene does not bleach teeth; it removes stains so your natural shade shows again. For many patients this already makes the smile look brighter. If you want a stronger change, we can discuss Ultradent Boost (550 AZN) or Philips Zoom 4 (1200 AZN).

How much does it cost and how long does it take?

Complex professional oral hygiene starts from 160 AZN and usually takes one visit of about an hour. If gingivitis is present, a two-session course costs 300 AZN. You can book at +994 55 501 01 07, Babek Avenue 1131, Babək Plaza, Baku.
