Root canal treatment (endodontics — care of the inside of the tooth) in Baku is carried out by endodontist Dr. Saig Gahramanov at Smile by Dr. Bakhtiyar. The inflamed pulp (the nerve and blood vessels inside the tooth) is removed, the canals are cleaned, disinfected and sealed with a special material. This way the tooth is not extracted and keeps working when you chew.
Treatment is usually needed with deep decay, pain that keeps you awake at night, a long reaction to cold or hot food, discomfort when you bite down, gum swelling or a tooth that turns darker. Sometimes there is no pain at all and the problem only shows up when we look at the X-ray. That is why at the first visit the doctor examines the tooth and the whole mouth and, when needed, checks the roots with an X-ray or 3D CBCT — the examination can be decisive for the future of the tooth.
The procedure goes step by step. First we take an image and explain the plan in simple words. Then effective anaesthesia is given, so you do not feel pain during treatment. The tooth is isolated with a rubber sheet (rubber dam), the canals are cleaned, rinsed, measured with a device and digital X-ray, and then filled. Finally the tooth is restored.
Once the anaesthesia wears off, mild discomfort when biting can last one to three days. This is a normal reaction and it fades gradually. In the first days it is better not to chew hard food on that side. After root canal treatment the tooth is always restored with a filling (composite restoration, 152 AZN) — this is the final part of the treatment. If the crown of the tooth is badly broken down, the doctor may suggest a protective crown. Please come back for the follow-up check.
The first visit, consultation and personal treatment plan cost 60 AZN, a panoramic X-ray 30 AZN and 3D imaging 100 AZN. Is root canal treatment painful?
The treatment is done under effective anaesthesia, so you do not feel pain during the procedure. Many patients say it feels like having a normal filling. If anything feels uncomfortable, tell the doctor and the anaesthesia can be topped up.
How many visits will I need?
For ordinary toothache (removing the nerve) we complete root canal treatment in a single visit. If there is a broken instrument in the canal, or an infection or cyst at the root tip, it takes 1–2 visits: medication is placed in the canal and healing is allowed. The doctor confirms the number after looking at your scan.
Do I need a crown after root canal treatment?
No, not always. After root canal treatment the tooth is always restored with a filling — a composite restoration costs 152 AZN and in most cases that is enough. A crown is needed only when the crown of the tooth is badly broken down; the doctor decides this at the examination.
My previously treated tooth hurts again. What now?
A repeat root canal treatment is possible in such cases. The old material is removed and the canals are cleaned and sealed again. A 3D CBCT scan helps us check the root before deciding.
